On his inauguration day in his new role, Zohran Mamdani pledged to “reinvent” America's largest city, declaring “a new era” and an audacious start to his tenure.

A Groundbreaking Leader

The young political star, who was a virtually unknown state assemblyman, has become the city's first mayor born in Africa. He also made history by being the inaugural to be take the oath of office using the Qur'an.

“A moment like this seldom arrives and even more uncommon is it that the citizens whose grasp the mechanisms of progress,” Mamdani added.

Defying advice to temper hopes, the mayor asserted: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to change is that of limited ambitions. Beginning today we will lead expansively and audaciously.”

Governing with Socialist Convictions

Mamdani did not shy away from his political ideology. “I was elected as a socialist leader and I will govern as one. I will not compromise my convictions for concern of being called radical,” he said to rapturous applause.

The inauguration was a two-part event, beginning with a late-night oath-taking in a disused subway station. He was officially inaugurated on the front steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's election as a victory over the status quo.

An Ambitious Blueprint

Mamdani now undertakes one of the most challenging jobs in American politics, with a platform including:

• Universal childcare
• Fare-free public buses
• A rent freeze for approximately 1 million households
• A pilot of city-run grocery stores

The projected $10 billion price tag of these programs may be challenging to fund. Mamdani has vowed to increase levies for the city's top earners and corporations. However, as a city under the authority of the state government, he will require the cooperation of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Navigating External Dynamics

The new mayor will deal with apprehension from some members of the Jewish community concerned about his past comments regarding Israel. Tensions were highlighted during the transition when a senior aide stepped down over offensive past social media posts.

Mamdani has attempted to address these concerns by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, preventing the optics of losing a top Jewish official.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “communist” and warned of withholding government money. Despite this, a prior meeting between the two was described as surprisingly productive.

The Core Tests of Leadership

In the end, New York mayors are evaluated by their ability in delivering essential functions: sanitation, curbing the rodent problem, repairing roadways, and ensuring smooth transit operation.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his team's anti-crime efforts, pointing to historically low numbers of murders and shootings in 2025, with murders recorded.

As his term begins, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Astoria apartment to the stately mayoral residence. The previous occupant offered a unusual warning about a supposed friendly ghost in the home, which allegedly only haunts those who do not act to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani ended his remarks with a direct statement: “The work has only just begun.”
