Users Discontinuing Weight-Loss Jabs Regain Pounds Far More Rapidly Than Dieters
A recent study suggests that individuals who stop using new weight-loss injections like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain shed pounds far faster than those who stop conventional lifestyle programs.
Findings released in a major medical journal shows that while overweight individuals frequently drop a large proportion of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"Individuals using such treatments should be cognizant of the danger of fast weight regain when the treatment concludes," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain implies a reversion to pre-treatment weight within about one and a half years.
Analyzing Approaches
The research, which looked at dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.
The team emphasize that people who shed pounds through dieting usually see a more gradual creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
The Reason for the Fast Rebound
Nutrition scientists believe the mechanism of the drugs explains the heightened rebound.
GLP-1 drugs copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates hunger.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels far above than normal could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and may also reduce responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to appetite is no longer kept in check, making overeating a significant risk."
An Ongoing Disease?
The NHS recommend the jabs for individuals with weight-linked health risks, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.
Professionals argue that, given the likelihood of relapse, the therapy might need to be life-long.
This view is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "underscore the persistent character of obesity," similar to managing diseases like diabetes.
User Experiences
Users who have come off the jabs report a sudden resurgence of appetite.
"It was like something flipping and you become extremely hungry," said a patient.
The struggle is exacerbated if individuals have not developed lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Growing Interest
Recent estimates show that millions of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest continuing to grow.
- Adoption is greater among females than men.
- The middle-aged age group shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, clinicians caution that while the jabs are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone cure and long-term success relies on integrated lifestyle changes.
