PSG Overcomes Marseille on Penalties to Lift French Season-Opening Trophy in Kuwait.

PSG players celebrating

PSG has now claimed the season-opening cup on 14 separate times.

The Parisian giants needed a stoppage-time equaliser followed by a perfect spot-kick decider to overcome Marseille in Kuwait and secure a fourth straight French Super Cup victory.

The Champions League holders appeared to be sailing towards a comfortable win in the match between the Ligue 1 winners and the Coupe de France winners after the French winger opened the scoring in the opening stages.

Yet, Marseille struck two times late to take a surprise advantage. First, Mason Greenwood scored from the spot-kick, before the defender inadvertently turned the ball into his own net for an own goal.

In a breathtaking turn of events, the Portuguese striker snatched a vital equaliser in the final moments to send the contest into a deciding shootout. PSG goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier then emerged as the hero, saving crucial attempts from O'Riley and Hamed Traore.

In the shootout, Ramos, Vitinha, Nuno Mendes, and the young talent all converted with composure for Paris Saint-Germain to seal a 4-1 shootout victory.

The record winners Paris Saint-Germain, who faced last season's Ligue 1 second-placed team Olympique de Marseille after completing a league and cup double, have now lifted this trophy for the 12th time in the last 13 years.
