Micky van de Ven found the net on two occasions as Spurs prolonged their unbeaten run in away games in the top division and handed Everton their first defeat at their new home.

The Toffees were unbeaten in their last five matches at their new ground at the dockside location, having departed their historic home behind after more than a century at the conclusion of the previous campaign.

But Tottenham's leader the Dutchman pounced on two occasions from set-pieces in the first half to place their strong form at jeopardy, and they were failed to turn it around before Pape Matar Sarr - set up by ex-Everton forward the Brazilian - nodded in a final goal to put the game to bed.

The Everton defender thought he had equalized the tally a short while after the defender's first goal, directing a bullet header past the Spurs keeper from an Everton corner.

Beto, meanwhile, missed a handful of opportunities, while Vicario made a series of excellent stops to ensure Tottenham went five matches on the road without defeat in the Premier League.

But the VAR intervened, instructing Craig Pawson to check the goal on the screen and the referee decided that the winger and the attacker were in offside positions and had interfered with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

The win moves the manager's team up to third in the division, a handful of points off north London rivals and table-toppers the Gunners.

The Merseyside club stay 14th and sit six points clear of the drop zone.

Tottenham analysis: Van de Ven fulfils duties at both ends of the field

Following a drab weekday display in the Champions League against Monaco, where they mustered a mere two shots on goal, the manager chose Randal Kolo Muani up front instead of former Toffees player the Brazilian.

The new arrival was failed to influence the game before being replaced for the substitute after 60 minutes on the pitch, but it turns out he proved unnecessary in the end.

Centre-back Van de Ven converted into an offensive threat to be feared.

Spurs' first goal came from a cleverly executed corner routine, with Rodrigo Bentancur directing the ball back across the six-yard box for an free Van de Ven to head home.

And the captain - filling in as skipper in Cristian Romero's unavailability - added his second in added time as he rose above the England keeper to head home.

Van de Ven was equally outstanding in defence, combining effectively with his defensive colleague as the pair handled superbly with the 34 crosses sent their way by the opposition.

Toffees breakdown: Everton lacking striker's instinct

The club's new home had been a fortress, but it seems the freshness may have worn off slightly and supporters headed to the gates after the midfielder's third for Tottenham.

The break in Everton's unbeaten home run will not be a massive worry for the manager, but their attacking woes are.

Beto and the other striker - the Toffees' pair of recognised centre-forwards - had netted just one league goal combined before the weekend's outing.

And they were unable to add to that miserable record on a wet and gloomy evening on Merseyside.

The striker's performance was epitomized when he opted to overhead kick a clear chance from near the goal, despite having space and opportunity to reposition for a more conventional attempt that would have challenged the keeper.

Barry, as well, failed to make an impact after coming on for Beto in the second half.

It was not for a shortage of opportunity. The majority of the home side's offensive moves came through the winger and Ndiaye, who relentlessly delivered dangerous balls into the Tottenham penalty area.

Everton: The team travel to the Stadium of Light in the Premier League on early November at 20:00 GMT.

Tottenham: Spurs go to Newcastle's ground on late October for their next round Carabao Cup tie against the Magpies.
